Advances in positron emission tomography (PET) instrumentation have revolutionized clinical PET imaging. Modern PET scanners can image the entire body over multiple bed positions, typically in 10 minutes to 15 minutes, enabling efficient molecular characterization of disease. Ultimately, however, the limited axial field of view (AFOV) of commercial scanners limits overall sensitivity and the ability to image disparate organ simultaneously. 1Motivated by the theoretic benefits of an increased AFOV, the National institutes of Healthfunded EXPLORER Consortium led to the development of 2 total-body (TB) scanners2: the PennPET Explorer, based at the University of Pennsylvania, and the uEXPLORER, based at University of California, Davis. Herein, the PennPET Explorer is discussed; the uEXPLORER is discussed in detail separately in this issue of PET Clinics. Both scanners are based on technology from commercial PET scanners with collaboration from industry partners: United Imaging Healthcare (Shanghai, China) for the uEXPLORER and Philips Healthcare (Cleveland, Ohio) for the PennPET Explorer. Although the 2-m AFOV of the uEXPLORER makes it truly a total-body imager and is greater than that of the AFOV of the PennPET Explorer, both instruments image all major organs in the body with high sensitivity in a single bed position. 3–6
