Abstract This invited address was given at the Annual Conference of the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) Wolverhampton, UK, in June 2001. It deals with the impact of newborn hearing screening on parents and professionals by focusing on the notion of choices for parents and the influence of professionals on these choices. It is emphasized that making choices is an on-going process, and in this context, three factors are considered: the giving of information, the expectations of parents and the issue of family identity. Each of these is explored and useful checklists are provided for parents and professionals to serve as possible guidelines during the process.
