1. The Chumash languages of southern California were once spoken in territory which stretched for some 150 or 175 miles along the coast from just west and north of the Los Angeles plain to an unknown point some distance north of San Luis Obispo. They also were used on three (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, and Santa Cruz) of the offshore islands along that coast. The Pacific shore in much of this region is closely bordered by hills and mountains: Chumash speaking groups are believed to have occupied many of the interior valleys which lie here and there among these mountains, but of only one of these interior dialects do we possess a more than scanty knowledge. (And that one was spoken no more than fifteen miles from tidewater, though separated from it by a range of hills 3-4000 ft.
