Studies on 5 spp. of tsetse flies (Glossina pallidipes, G. austeni, G. brevipalpis, G. morsitans and G. palpis) revealed about 2-3% of G. pallidipes and a smaller % of G. morsitans having hypertrophied salivary glands. Specimens of G. pallidipes with this abnormality are peculiarly suited for the development of trypanosomes, particularly T. brucei and to a lesser degree T. congolcnsc or T. vivax. There appears to be no evidence that the abnormal salivary glands of G. morsitans aid the development of T. rhodesiense.
