Rabbit fibrinogen labeled with more than 0.5 atoms-I/molecule is partly denatured as shown by its behavior in the plasma of recipient animals and by rates of isotope excretion. When 0.5 atom material was injected along with Cl4-biosynthetically labeled fibrinogen the proteins behaved identically. At equilibrium 80% of the total labeled fibrinogen in the body was in the blood stream and 30-40% of the plasma fibrinogen was catabolised/day. Proportions of non-precipitable activity in the plasma gave a good indication of the catabolic rate if the excretion rate for iodide was known. Only small amounts of subcutaneously injected labeled fibrinogen passed into the blood stream and activity arising from catabolism of the remainder rapidly appeared in the urine.
