Post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common cause of morbidity after coronary surgery, with an incidence that increases with patient age (1, 2). The burdens of POAF include increased hospitalization stays/costs and poorer patient prognosis. Patients experiencing POAF have an increased propensity for adverse coronary events, a greater incidence of cerebrovascular accidents, and a higher degree of long-term mortality (3). The incidence of POAF is particularly problematic for patients with metabolic syndrome, which is known to be an independent risk factor for POAF (4, 5).
