In 1979, Shigesada et al. proposed a mathematical model in which the movements of two competing species are also affected by, besides diffusion, the population pressures, which are usually referred to as self-diffusion and cross-diffusion pressures. It was hoped that the nonlinear dispersive force due to these inter-and intra-specific interactions may give rise to a spatial segregation of the two species, while diffusion alone can not have this type of effect. To this date, the understanding of self-diffusion and cross-diffusion seems still very limited.
