Rhabdomere twisting of all visual cells R1-6 in the eye of C. erythrocephala Meigen and possible influence of injuries are presented. Rhabdomeres of the peripheral visual cells twist discontinuously; they comprise 3 sections, differing significantly in direction and rate of twist. The midpoint of the middle section always lies within the region of transition between R7 and R8. The twist in cells R1-3 of each ommatidium is the mirror image of that in R4-6. The typical twisting pattern is observed consistently in corresponding rhabdomeres of different individuals. It is affected neither by mechanical manipulation (cutting through the eye in vivo) nor by chemical artifacts (differing methods of fixation), and is thus an in vivo phenomenon.
