A thorough literature survey of the origin and use of the crutch has been conducted with a view towards discovering where design improvements might be worthwhile. An experimental photographic technique has been developed to gather three-dimensional data of swing-through crutch gait. The experimental data gathered is compared with existing data on normal walking. Based on the experimental comparisons, design improvement criteria are formulated for the development of new crutch configurations.
