Using surgical material, fertilization and cleavage of human eggs in 3 different cases obtained from ovarian tissue just prior to expected ovulation were achieved in vitro. The eggs were washed in Locke''s soln., incubated in the serum of the same patient, exposed at room temp. to a washed sperm suspension in Locke''s soln., and examined at [image]35 magnification. After 1 hr. each ovum was transferred to fresh serum and re-examined. After fertilization, 2 eggs lasted 401/2 and 45 hrs., respectively, in the 2-cell stage, and both eggs were seen in the 3-cell stage 46 hrs. after exposure to sperm.
