In this paper, the author tried to grasp that how do design constraints affect designer’s creativity. He made some experimental programs in his basic design education class. In those experiments, subjects (students) were divided into four groups and assigned same project with different material constraints for each group. As the results of the experiments, we saw that, in some case, material constraints apparently facilitate subjects’ creativity while in the other case conversely it suppressed subjects’ creativity. The author concluded that if we grasp the right relations of constraints and design objectives, we could facilitate design creativity by giving proper constraints.
