Outlines a theory of the determinants of performance intensity which combines concepts of decision theory with those of attribution theory. The theory is used to analyze the effects of a task's perceived difficulty, an S's perception of his own ability, and the experience of success or failure on the vigor with which a task is undertaken. The personality dispositions of need for achievement and anxiety are also related to these basic concepts. The relationship between the present theory and J. Atkinson's theory of achievement motivation is discussed. Possible further developments of this theoretical approach are noted.(49 ref.)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
