The hazards of the dansyl chloride test are not negligible. We introduce the dihydroxyacetone test as a safe substitute. Several advantages are highlighted including easy and reproducible measurements of the modifications in skin color by chromometry in the L*a*b* (luminance. hue. chroma) mode.
