Species compatibility relationships of Camellia were based on representatives of 6 subgeneric sections and an unplaced group, Dubiae. Analysis of intersectional compatibility relationships suggested that the sections fall into 2 fairly distinct groups. In the first, species in the Paracamellia and Thea sections are more closely related to each other than to species in other sections. It is suggested that C. hiemalis and C. miyagii of Dubiae belong within Paracamellia. In the second group, species in the Theopsis, Camelliopsis, Camellia and Heterogenea sections are more closely related to each other than to species of the first group.
