A unicellular alga, Chlorella sp., was grown together with chick fibroblasts in a medium of chicken plasma and chick embryonic tissue extract in vitro. Macrophages and fibroblasts took up some of the algae. The algae appeared to undergo digestion in some cells; in others they remained green and multiplied, eventually shaking off the phagocyte. The animal cells in the mixed cultures were less fatty and granular and grew more than those in the controls without the algae. The plant cells were greener and multiplied faster than those in the controls without the tissue cells. Similar results were obtained with amphibian tissues and Chlorella. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Auth. abst
