Abstract Dinosaur remains from Cretaceous strata in Japan are found in different sedimentary environments. Sixteen horizons in 14 stratigraphic units that yield dinosaurs from the Cretaceous in Japan and Sakhalin are presented with marine stage nomenclature based on zonal indices. Dinosaur affinities and similarities in the dinosaur faunas between Japan and the Asian continent are recognizable. This suggests that most of the Japanese islands were part of the eastern margin of the Asiatic continent during the Cretaceous. Habitats analysed on the basis of fauna, flora and sedimentology represent everything from inland to sea-shore. Allochthonous occurrences are often recognized in the outer zone of Japan, while autochthonous ones occur in the inner zone. Some dinosaurs from Japan are considered to have changed their habitat preferences from those on the Asian continent.
