The effect, as measured by the voluntary water intake, is not only prompt but reproducible with remarkable uniformity. The phenomenon is furthermore of considerable theoretical interest, because it appears to be one of the most direct clues to the nature of the mechanism of thirst (1-3). This prompted us several years ago to study the phenomenon but soon after delivering a preliminary report on our findings (4) the experiments were interrupted by the war and have only recently been resumed (5, 6). The present paper, covering the initial studies on dogs deals with I) various characteristics of this form of thirst so far as they can be judged by the drinking response, z) tests with crystalloids other than NaCl to determine whether or not NaCl has a specific function in the thirst mechanism, and 3) certain experiments designed to explore the nature of the mechanism by which hypertonic solutions cause thirst.
