Cardiac tachyarrhythmias are the leading cause of mortality, and a considerable cause of morbidity in the developed world. Conventional therapies, including antiarrhythmic drugs, implantable devices, and ablation, have been inadequate in solving this problem. Biological therapies are proposed as next-generation solutions for arrhythmias. The underlying idea is that biological therapies can attack the root cause of the arrhythmia, with the possibility of long-term palliation or even cure. In this chapter, we review general concepts in gene and cell therapy, and the application of these concepts to atrial fibrillation and post-myocardial infarction ventricular tachyarrhythmias.
