The subject of this paper is the frictional drag of real hull surfaces determined from the proper hydrodynamic data applied to the actual surfaces in question. A survey of the data is given for more than 40 different roughnesses, all of which are replicas of, or test models of, actual hull surfaces. The full-scale planar drag is obtained for a selection of these surfaces. The significance of the results is discussed in relation to model-ship performance prediction and in connection with cost-benefit analysis of maintenance. The heart of the paper is a survey of Clauser functions, which gives the physical facts of hull roughness as they govern drag.
