The extra-systolic arhythmia produced by chloroform anesthesia requires an intact sympathetic pathway to the heart for its production and maintenance. In the cat, decerebration in the Sherrington plane, section of the upper 4 thoracic anterior roots on both sides, or removal of the stellate ganglia abolished the abnormal rhythm provided the adrenal glands had been removed. An area of the hypothalamus was found which when destroyed produced the same results. Lesions of this area were made and the degenerations traced by Marchi and Alzheimer-Mann methods. Degenerated fibers could be traced into the reticular formation of the mid-brain and medulla and also into the anterior column of white matter in the cord as low as the second lumbar segment. The degenerated fibers were associated with the posterior longitudinal bundle and the reticular formation immediately lateral to it.
