The reaction of H atoms with propylene has been investigated in an isothermal flow system at temperatures and pressures in the range 195 to 390 K and 1.6 to 20 Torr, respectively.
A detailed study has been made of the distribution of stable products by means of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The product distribution was found to be both pressure and temperature dependent for all main products (H2, C3H8, C2H4, C2H6, CH4, i-C4H10 except for hydrogen.
By determining the H atom concentrations using ESR spectroscopy, the rate constants for H atom addition to terminal
and non-terminal
olefinic position could be evaluated:
A mechanism accounting for the observed products is discussed in detail. Relative and absolute rate constants of some individual reactions have been determined from product distribution.
