Large-scale interest in synthetic organophosphorus compounds started during World War II, because of their potential as warfare agents. Since then, various industrial, agricultural, medical and consumer applications have been found for organophosphorus compounds. They are now of great economic importance as they are extensively used as pesticides. About 200 organophosphorus pesticides have thus far been developed (2). Besides agricultural applications, organophosphorus compounds have been used as flame retardants, plasticizer, gasoline additives, cleaning agents, water1This review has been written as a part of support documents to develop a knowledge rule-based artificial intelligence/expert system for predicting and/or assessing the carcinogenic potential of chemical compounds (see ref. 1).
