In recent years a series of papers [1]-[3] have beendevotedto clarifying the conditions under which a contraction operator T (II T II-~ 1) is similar to a unitary operator. In the paper of B. Nagy and C. Foias among other important results there is contained the following fact: if a simple contraction operator is similar to a unitary operator, then the corresponding unitary operator has an absolutely continuous spectrum.
