Studies of Mantle Anisotropy with Long-Period Seismology

本研究将继续研究几种理想化的各向同性和各向异性地球模型的长周期地震响应，以确定地球上地幔各向异性的可观测方面。初步计算表明，在典型海洋盆地的长度尺度上，上地幔方位角的各向异性只要有几个百分点的空间相干性，就足以在长周期表面波中产生显著的波形异常。在本研究中，将对理论进行扩展，并对不同类型的上地幔各向异性进行测试。

This research is to continue study of the long-period seismic response of several idealized isotropic and anisotropic earth models to determine the observable aspects of anisotropy in the earth's upper mantle. The initial calculations suggest that upper-mantle azimuthal anisotropy of a few percent, spatially coherent over the length scale of a typical ocean basin, is sufficient to generate significant waveform anomalies in long- period surface waves. In this research the theory will be extended and tests will be done for different types of anisotropy in the upper mantle.
