A combined therapy /imaging system is being developed where the imaging system provides noninvasive feedback for monitoring and guiding the therapeutic beam. Our approach is to use RF diagnostic pulse echo ultrasound data to localize and track the lesion formation process, including noninvasive estimation of temperature at the focus site. We have collected extensive experimental evidence (both in vitro and in vivo) that validates our approach. Investigation of new algorithms for high resolution acoustic imaging with nonconventional large aperture arrays. A new formulation of the imaging equation for ultrasound propagation allows for the implementation of the imaging operator as a set of transversal filters. This approach utilizes coded excit ation, which allows for the simultaneous acquisition of a large number of image lines, thus making feasible the real time 3D imaging with ultrasound . Furthermore, it does not require Nyquist sampling of the array aperture thus avoiding significant practical problems associated with arrays containing large numbers of subwavelength elements. Unlike conventional pulse echo systems, the complexity of the system ( 0*0*0* envisioned based on the new approach will be in the design of high throughput transversal filters for real time implementation.
