Loihi July, 1996 Seismic Crisis Response

1996年7月16日，美国地质调查局夏威夷火山观测站地震阵列探测到Loihi海山的地震群，此时已经记录了2000多次地震。这是夏威夷火山有记录以来最强烈的地震群。预计这一群会伴随着火山活动，该项目将使用夏威夷大学的研究船KOK和双鱼座潜水器。海山的水深测量将被重新测量，海山上的水将被采样以确定任何喷发活动，如果安全考虑允许，还将获得岩石样本。

9616913 Duennebier A Seismic swarm at Loihi seamount detected by the US Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory seismic array began on 16 July 1996 and, at this time, over 2000 earthquakes have bee recorded. This is the most intense swarm of earthquakes ever recorded from any Hawaiian volcano. Anticipating that this swarm is accompanied by volcanic activity, this project will use the University of Hawaii research vessel KOK and Pisces submersible. the bathymetry of the seamount will be resurveyed, the water over the seamount will be sampled to locate any eruptive activity, and, if safety considerations allow, rock samples obtained.
