Dissertation Research: Modernity with Chinese Characteristics-Image Construction in Post-Mao Beijing

Anne-Marie Broudehoux University of California, Berkeley The doctoral dissertation research proposal investigates the process of image making in Beijing, the Chinese capital city, from the beginning of the reform era to the current day. The overall objective is to seek to understand the spatial construction of identity in the context of China's transition from planned to market economy and the impact of urban redevelopment of the city on the reconfiguration of Chinese society and its experience of modernity. Three case studies of urban space will be used to assess the image formation process. The project relies on written and pictorial evidence as well as on ethnographic investigation in the extant urban fabric of Beijing.
