This grant will support studies of the b (beauty) quark, one of the six types of quarks which have been discovered. The b quark is the heaviest stable quark. This allows many studies to be made of its properties. We need to develop an understanding of these properties to learn how the different types of quarks are related to each other. The ultimate goal of this experiment is to understand why nature breaks some symmetries - for example, why the Universe is comprised of matter and not anti-matter.
