Mechanical spectroscopy of aluminium-based materials with self-organised and microstructural types of strain localisation

Mechanical spectroscopy is used to study self-organised (Portevin-Le Chatelier effect) as well as microstructural types of strain localisation. The thermo-mechanically coupled microscopic processes, causing the PLC effect, are to be analysed by temperature- and amplitude-dependent spectra of anelastic and microplastic internal friction, which also yield kinetic parameters that can be used as an input for computer simulations. In addition, deformation inhomogeneities in metal-matrix composites (MMCs), including microstructural changes and possibly damages after plastic deformation or thermal treatment, will be sensitively caracterised by damping spectra and elastic quantities. The underlying mechanisms are to be clarified by combining mechanical spectroscopy with other methods. In summary, the project is aiming at understanding mutual interrelations between elastic inhomogeneities, plastic localisation and damping processes, thus contributing to a multi-functionally optimised use of materials including damping properties.
