The research within ViVaCE in its first phase was devoted to the development of robust and reliable simulation tools that can be used to perform virtual experiments on materials and structures. These tools will be further developed in the second and third phases of ViVaCE and will be applied to the analysis of heterogeneous materials. One of the major points will be the validation of the numerical tools, but there will be also new developments related to simulation methods, such as model-reduction techniques and automatic code generation. These will be applied to multi-scale/multi-physics problems including uncertainty and sensitivity analysis.The cooperation with the ENS Cachan provided to the PhD candidates a fruitful and international environment, that constitutes a forum for research and development of new methodologies and numerical simulation tools that can be used to perform virtual experiments and their validation. The collocation of the PhD candidates in the premises of the graduate school MUSIC (Multi-Scale Methods for Interface Coupling) provides a multidisciplinary working environment that allows for collaboration and scientific exchanges between excellent Master-students, PhD candidates and associated Post-Docs of ViVaCE and other training groups.In ViVaCE PhD candidates are working together in a multidisciplinary manner. They work on implementation of new methods, carry out virtual experiments related to materials and structures and validate these. The participation of PIs from mechanics, structural analysis, material science, mechanical engineering and applied mathemat-ics ensures a broad knowledge base that allows for new insights. The strong interaction with colleagues from the LMT of the ENS Cachan completes the research profile of ViVaCE in the areas of multi-scale/multi-physics and related experimental methods in connection with composite materials. The stay of German PhD candidates at ENS Cachan and vice versa of French PhD candidates at LUH enlarges the scientific knowledge base as well as the horizon of experience for the participants in a positive manner.
