CAREER: Optimal Design of Smart Materials

This CAREER award is made to advance both research and education inengineering. The research is to study the microscopic features of physicalmechanisms and their relations with macroscopic cyclic mechanical behavior inpolycrystalline metallic materials near room temperature. The goal is tobridge practical stress analysis with fundamental findings in materialscience. The education plan consists of innovative teaching and developingundergraduate and graduate courses. A systematic pilot research program willbe created to involve undergraduate students in research projects to provideearly exposure to practical problems. Self-directed and open-ended laboratoryexperiments will be developed to encourage the students to be more creative.
