The investigator and his colleagues organize a workshop toexplore opportunities in robotics for synergistic collaborationsamong engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians. Theworkshop brings together engineers, computer scientists, andmathematicians to discuss examples of research needs in robotics,to look for common themes, and to explore new ideas, rooted inmathematics, that could advance this area. A major product of theworkshop is a report that summarizes the present state of the artand that lays out future opportunities for collaborativeresearch. Robotics is concerned with the design of mechanicalmanipulators, the systems needed to control them, and variousapplications such as materials handling, assembly, exploration inextreme environments, prosthetics, and minimally invasivesurgery. For their solution, problems in robotics have drawnheavily on techniques and ideas from engineering and computerscience. It is becoming apparent that progress on significantopen problems requires greater involvement of modern mathematics. This workshop combines engineers, computer scientists, andmathematicians in a joint exploration of needs and opportunitiesin robotics. The workshop report is expected to stimulate bothnew interactions among researchers and new insights andapproaches to this important class of problems.
