Operation of the Stony Brook Linac for Weak Interaction Measurements in Francium and Nuclear Structure Studies

The Stony Brook Superconducting LINAC is a low-energy heavy ionaccelerator with a broadly based research program that studiesspecial properties of nuclei and atoms. The research emphasizesfrontier issues in physics. The rare element, francium, has beenproduced and trapped with lasers, and work is now going on tomeasure the anapole moments of several francium nuclei. The anapolemoment arises from the weak interactions between neutrons andprotons in the nucleus. Other research focuses on unusual nucleithat exhibit a "handedness" to their structure, and nuclei that arestressed by large excitation energy, large amounts of angularmomentum or large difference in neutrons from that of stablenuclei. The Stony Brook Nuclear Structure Laboratory also serves asa focus of many educational activities. Students at the highschool, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels participatein the research program with various intensities, from beam lineconstruction to running actual experiments.
