Research in theoretical elementary particle physics will includestudies of: (i) the partonic structure of the nucleon within theframework of perturbative quantum chromodynamics, (ii) the origin ofelectroweak interaction symmetry breaking; and (iii) observable signaturesof new physics, such as supersymmetric particles and extra dimensions. Partonsare fundamental constituents (i.e. quarks and gluons) of observed nuclearparticles, such as protons and neutrons. Electroweak interaction symmetrybreaking is intimately related to the origin of masses of fundamentalparticles. New physics scenarios, such as supersymmetry and extradimensions, if discovered, could extend our understanding of the extremelysuccessful Standard Model of elementary particle physics to a much deeperlevel.
