PREMISE: Applying Decision Production Systems to Improve Environmentally Responsible Product Development

The objective of this research project is to understand howproduct development organizations use environmental information intheir decision-making during the design of a new product. The researchviews product development as an information flow governed bydecision-makers who must act under time and budget constraints. Theproject will conduct an exploratory study to describe the flow ofinformation related to environmental decision-making in the productdevelopment activities of an electronics manufacturing company. Theproject will construct a long-term collaborative research agenda toimprove environmentally responsible product development, particularlyby integrating design decision support tools into other productdevelopment activities.If successful, this research will yield new models that guide thedevelopment of powerful decision support tools (for specific decision-makers) and the rational and systematic deployment of these tools acrossthe entire product development organization. Ultimately, this will reducethe time and cost of environmentally responsible product developmentacross a range of industrial sectors. The research will benefit societyby helping manufacturing companies develop energy-efficient andenvironmentally benign products.
