The goal of the research program at the University of South Carolinais to investigate the structure of protons and neutrons(collectively known as nucleons), and other subatomic particles. Theproperties of subatomic particles - such as their mass or the mannerin which they are produced - hold key information on the fundamentalforces of nature. Using powerful microscopes comprised of beams ofphotons or electrons, our experiments are able to probe the behaviorof forces inside the atomic nucleus. These endeavors areaccomplished using particle detectors located in Hall-B at theThomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) in NewportNews, Virginia. The University of South Carolina JLab group consists of threeprofessors, two postdoctoral scientists, five graduate students, andfour undergraduate students. We are devoted to education andtherefore invest a significant portion of our research timeinvolving students and young research scientists in our experimentsto provide a component of their education that is not available inthe classroom.
