The domestic foundation of governmental preferences over European politics (C06)

The project develops a new theory of national partyism, which locates the origins of governmental preferences in domestic ideological party competition. In the third phase, we will focus on the role of the European Parliament (EP) and the tension between responsibility for European integration and responsiveness to the voters. First, we will investigate the veto role of the EP in EU decision-making, and its implications for the activities of the judiciary, bureaucracy, and the central bank. Second, we will examine the informational role of the EP by investigating the type of messages which the party groups send by their declarations and speeches. Finally, we will explore how voters understand and interpret these messages by paying attention to the declining turnout, the decreasing public support, and the rise of Eurosceptic parties.
