In vivo imaging building on scanning microscopy has been a stronghold of our research in the past years. Besides the requirement for the progress of our own research, the list of attached projects from two more laboratories in our institute states the immanent need for this microscope. Most of the different confocal microscopes on the campus lm Neuenheimer Feld” have been tailored to the requirements of the users. All these confocal microscopes are in intensive use and do not have free capacities to allow a continuation of our research. Due to the use of mutants in advanced experimental embryology we require many and long (24-72hrs) imaging sessions. This can in part be overcome by the multiview option that allows in part to parellelize the analysis and is thus very cost effective. To visualize and follow the formation of contacts between cells in the retina we need to penetrate >200 µm into the eye and retinal tissue, cover >15 µm of z-volume, while imaging at a high speed to adequately follow dynamics of neuronal outgrowths.
