The Himalayan Range is the highest on Earth resulting from India indenting into Asia. When and how the range has reached its current high elevation are important scientific problems because this knowledge allows scientists to determine the forces that create the mountains and the effects of the high mountains on changes in local and global climates due to the strong interferences of the Himalayas on atmospheric circulations. The research project conducted by Professor An Yin and his students at UCLA is addressing the problems by conducting field surveys and geologic mapping in the NW Indian Himalayas and by performing laboratory measurements to determine the time and rate of Himalayan uplift.
