Red Raider Mini-Symposium, November 17-19, 2005 : "Geometry, Statistics and Image Analysis" focuses on nonparametric statistics on manifolds,analyzes on shape spaces, saddlepoint approximations and systemstheory leading to frontiers of science in medical imaging, systemreliability, survival analysis, pattern recognition andbioinformatics. Principal speakers are Rudy Beran, University ofCalifornia Davis, internationally renowned for his contributionsto robust statistics, directional data analysis, andbootstrapping; Rabindra Bhattacharya, University of Arizona,internationally renowned for his contributions to large sampletheory, Edgeworth expansions and bootstrapping, statistics onmanifolds and stochastic partial differential equations; RonaldButler, Colorado State University, internationally renowned forhis contributions to saddlepoint methods, systems theory andstochastic networks, special function approximations, robustnessand likelihood inference; John Kent, University of Leeds, UnitedKingdom, internationally renowned for his contributions tomultivariate statistics, shape analysis and stochastic models forprotein structure, robustness, spatial statistics, tomography;Peter Kim, University of Guelph, Canada, internationally renownedfor his contributions to the interface between geometry andstatistics, density estimation on Riemannian manifolds andapplications of statistics to image acquisition, Madan Puri,Indiana University, internationally renowned for his contributionsto nonparametric statistics, splines, tests of normality, fuzzysets and measures, stochastic processes, statistics of directionaldata, random sets, and time series and Anuj Srivastava, nationallyrenowned for his contributions to "image understanding" which aimsto develop automated systems that can match human abilities inanalyzing images.This symposium is conceived to bring together outstanding researchersworking in the interface of geometry, statistics and imageanalysis and consists of a series of lectures by outstandingscholars in vibrant areas of mathematics and statistics, withimportant applications in astronomy and geophysics, homelandsecurity, medical imaging, computer vision and patternrecognition. These lectures provide an opportunity to learn aboutnew research venues for the members of the statistical community,especially early career researchers and graduate studentsincluding women and under represented minorities. Thismini-symposium provides a perfect medium for interaction andcollaboration between the conference participants and thedistinguished speakers. It will be very helpful for shaping futuredirections of statistical research that address problems of highsocietal impact.
