The objective of this research is to design, assemble, and characterize a metallic, negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) scaffold with integral piezoelectric ceramic nodes by direct writing of colloidal gel based inks. In direct writing, an ink filament capable of maintaining its extruded shape is deposited layer-by-layer to build up the desired structure. The piezoelectric NPR scaffolds will generate a nonlinear electromechanical response that will lead to a robust, highly deformable structure. The research challenges include design, printing and co-sintering of metallic and ceramic elements in a complex structure and characterization of the electromechanical properties of the device. Scientifically, this research will lead to directional actuating/sensing devices enabled by the utilization of cutting edge direct write manufacturing and novel structural design. Broad impact applications include dynamic filtration, biomedical devices, sensors, and actuators. Graduate and undergraduate students will gain education ranging from colloidal chemistry to electromechanical characterization.
