AST-0605080/Skrutskie, UVaThe Infrared Astronomy Laboratory at the University of Virginia will continue work on the extension of the sensitivity of Indium Gallium Arsenide arrays into the 2 - 2.32 micron band, continuing to reduce the cost per pixel of ground-based near-infrared astronomical imaging. A test array will be implemented in the Cornell-Massachusetts cross-dispersed low-resolution spectrograph, presently at the 3.5 m Apache Point Observatory. Also, the existing discrete device testing infrastructure in place at the lab will be used to implement a new Indium Gallium Arsenide-based detector design incorporating quantum dots into a single structure that will permit simultaneous imaging at three wavelengths (1, 5, and 10 microns) with bandwidths on the order of 20-30%.
