The research to be carried out centers on solar radio astronomy. Specifically, decimetricbursts will be studied using the combined spectral, temporal, and spatial capabilities ofthe Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA) and the Frequency Agile Solar Radiotelescope(FASR) Subsystem Testbed. The magnetic and plasma properties of the solar coronaabove active regions will also be explored, including elucidating the 3D structure of thecorona above active regions. In-depth studies of magnetic reconnection in both tworibbonflares and bursts with pulsations will be undertaken, and their relation to theacceleration of electrons that produce the radio and hard X-ray bursts will be evaluated. The OVSA instrument is a university-based solar-dedicated radio imaging array and theonly solar-dedicated radio instrument in the US. During the award period, thetesting/prototyping of technology for the Frequency Agile Solar Radiotelescope willbe continued. In addition, the data collected throughOVSA will made available to scientists world-wide as well as to undergraduates andgraduate students at the New jersey Institute of Technology for use in research projects.
