The Analytical and Surface Chemistry (ASC) program of the Division of Chemistry will support the research program of Prof. Michael Mirkin of CUNY Queens College. Prof. Mirkin's research aims to develop new electroanalytical techniques to measure ion and electron transport processes, first at interfaces and later in biological cells. To realize this goal, Prof. Mirkin and his students will fabricate nanopipette-based probes and employ them in conjunction with scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to interogate the observed samples. The project will advance basic understanding of the interactions between nanoelectrode based probes and soft interfaces. In the long term it will enable cell biologists to study the kinetics of ion and electron transport processes in cells. The study will provide an excellent educational opportunity for undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who wish to train in the cutting edge interdisciplinary area of nano-electrochemistry and its applications in biology.
