Workshop Proposal on Strategic Planning for an Academic/Industry Center for Language Technologies (Spring 2007, Washington DC metro area)

The purpose of this award is to plan and hold a two-day workshopinvolving representatives from academia, industry, and government todiscuss the feasibility of developing a center-based partnershipbetween industry and academia in the area of human language technology(HLT). Although currently this research area does not have such acenter, given the success story of Linguistics Data Consortium and thefact that there are many potential industrial partners, the time isripe to build a better understanding of how to create a center that isnot only mutually beneficial, but supports work that simply could notbe done by either partner alone. Such collaboration would beimportant for stimulating research excellence at the university whileenhancing the quality of the intellectual property of US HLTcompanies. The participants are meeting to develop a strategic planfor building a mutually beneficial research center. Generally centervehicles at NSF require strong commitments from industry. Thisworkshop will focus on evaluating the feasibility of buildingpartnerships for two of these programs: Industry/UniversityCooperative Research Centers and Engineering Research Centers:Partnerships in Transforming Research, Education and Technology. Theintellectual merit of the proposed activity is specific to theplanning of the workshop. The broader impacts of such a center wouldbe to stimulate HLT research at the university, while enhancing theintellectual property of industrial affiliates.
