The project investigates and develops autonomic mechanisms forreducing system downtime due to software maintenance and upgrades.The project addresses operating system upgrades and also applicationupgrades, focusing on standalone binary-executable applications. Themain goal is to lessen the possibility that patches and updates will``break'' expected functionality of the environment that worked finetogether with the old version -- overall maximizing availability andreliability both during and after maintenance while imposing littlemanagement overhead. The contributions stem primarily from avirtualization architecture that decouples application instances fromoperating system instances, enabling either to be independentlyupdated. The results, disseminated via web download, will improveavailability of legacy applications, with no source code access,modification, recompilation, relinking or application-specificsemantic knowledge, and perform efficiently and securely on commodityoperating systems and hardware.
