Acquisition of a Ground Penetrating Radar Environmental Imaging System

Funding from this grant will support acquisition of a ground penetrating radar (GPR) system equipped with multiple antennas (at frequencies of 150, 100 and 200 MHz) by the Department of Geography at Kent State University. The GPR system will facilitate faculty and student research requiring the capability for near subsurface imaging for studies of glaciofluvial bedforms of the Laurentide ice sheet (e.g., subglacial tunnel valleys), mapping of tsunami deposits, assessing the areal extent of anthropogenically impacted shallow aquifers in northern Ohio and archaeological studies of Mayan structures in the Yucatan Peninsula. The GPR will support undergraduate and graduate teaching and research training and PI collaborations with international colleagues and international research experiences for graduate and undergraduate students will be fostered.
