New Paleomagnetic and Environmental Magnetic Studies of Old Cores from the Ross Sea Sector, Antarctica

This project performs a paleomagnetic survey of marine sediment cores from Antarctica?s continental margin. These cores record the history of Antarctica?s ice sheets and are important records of global climate change. The new measurements improve dating and regional correlations to ascertain paleoenvironmental conditions and ice sheet behavior. These cores also record the earth?s magnetic field near the pole, which offers insight into the workings of the geodynamo.The broader impacts of this project include postdoctoral and undergraduate participation in research. There are also implications for society?s understanding of global climate change, since this work improves our understanding of the behavior of ice sheets and their links to the global climate system.
