英文摘要
AbstractAward: DMS-0844136Principal Investigator: Philip L. Boyland, Louis S. Block,Alexander N. Dranishnikov, James E. KeeslingThe University of Florida Department of Mathematics will host ajoint Ulam Centennial and 43rd Annual Spring Topology andDynamical Systems Conference (Ulam Centennial STDC-2009) fromSaturday, March 7 through Thursday, March 12, 2009. The AnnualSpring STDC's are among the nation's most successful series oftopology/dynamics conferences. Stanislaw Ulam would turn 100 inSpring, 2009. He was one of the preeminent mathematicalscientists of the 20th century and a Graduate Research Professorat the University of Florida. In light of Ulam's manycontributions to topology, dynamics, and related fields, it isvery fitting that the annual STDC be combined with an UlamCentennial. The joint conference will maintain the basicstructure and sessions of the STDC, but will be extended by 3days to allow additional special sessions and plenary lectures inthe areas of Ulam's many contributions to mathematics andscience.Topology studies generalized notions of spatial structure;Dynamical Systems studies the topological and analytic nature oftime evolution. Each is a fundamental part of modern mathematicsand has applications as far ranging as robotics, fluid mixing, computer networks and cardiac rhythms. Conferences arefundamental to the strength and development of mathematics, andas such are a fundamental part of the national scientificinfrastructure. This conference will combine the latest resultsin Topology and Dynamical Systems with many applied topicsassociated with Stan Ulam. While Ulam is perhaps best rememberedby the public for his participation in the Manhattan Project, hismathematical and scientific contributions were wide anddeep. They include significant work in numerical methods, classical mechanics, dynamical systems, number theory, graphtheory, set theory, and ergodic theory. Inspired by Ulam'sexample, the conference will advance top quality research inTopology and Dynamical Systems while facilitating broad and deepinteraction among adjacent mathematical research areas andbetween abstract and applied research.
