The sorting and assembly machinery (SAM) and the mitochondrial import (MIM) complex mediate the biogenesis of mitochondrial outer membrane proteins. We have discovered that both protein sorting machineries form a dynamic network to mediate biogenesis of different types of membrane-integrated proteins. In this project we will test our hypothesis that coupling to different partner proteins modulates the substrate specificity of both protein machineries. Therefore, we will define docking sites for partner proteins and precursor proteins and analyze the function of the interaction with partner proteins in protein sorting.
